Analysis of the Cause for Abmormal Combustion The proper servcing of spark plugs can help make the differnce in good engine performance and fuel economy. An engine with adequate compression and proper fuel/air mixture may fail to properly ignite the fuel charge in one or more serveral ways,depending on the condiction of the spark plugs. Misfire could be caused by improper fuel/air mixture in the cylinder. However,the problem is more comonly caused by faulty ignition. Spark Plug TIP Diagnosis Normal The nose of insulator appears yellow-brown,brown or lightish gray,electrode erosion is light.It shows the spark plug is suitable for engine. Electrode Melted The end of center electrode and ground electrode appear melted. Cause:Overheating Action:Regarding to type of spark plug,change to install a colder type of spark plug or higher heat range of spark plug. Overheated The insulator nose appears bleached white electrode melted Cause:Pre-ignition,insufficient cooling,low octane gasoline and thin fuel mixture are used.Spark plug extended into the combustion chamber is too long or a too hot spark plug be used. Action:Install a new colder type of spark plug Lead Pollution The color of the insulator appears powder white,yellow,yellowish,brown,green and black Cause:When an engine operate in low load speed,the 4 ethyl lead in gasoine deposit on the nose of insulator.While the engine accelerates,it operates in a high speed,heavy load condition,the temperature of spark plug increase further,then conductivity of the lead compound formed on the insulator surface increases,therefore causing the misfiring of spark plug. Action:Avoid using lead gasoline,or change touse a hotter type of spark plug Corona Stain Cause:The air ionized at 20kv-30kv high voltage and impurity of air adhered to the insulator surface. Action:There is no deterioration to the function of spark plug. A brown stain deposited on the insulator. Generally ,if spark plug install into four cylinders engine,two of them will have this problem. MMT pollution Cause:Unleaded gasoline,the manganese additive as the replacement of 4 ethyl lead has been added to gasoline.MMT deposited on the firing-end and became dark brown material,MMT melt at 700-800 temperature degree and conducts electrode,causing insulator resistance drops and misfire.When misfiring happen on high speed and heavy loaded,the car has less power. Action:Change gasoline,change spark plug. Oil Pollution Black wet shiny oil deposited on the firing-end of plug Cause:Piston ring worn,valve worn,or misadjustment of carburetor causing over-rich fuel mixture. Action:The fundamental reason of oil fouling is not the incorrect choice of spark plug,but it can be solved temporarily by a hotter type of spark plug. Carbon Pollution Black carbon pollution deposited on the firing end of plug,when this become serious,it may cause misfiring. Cause:Carbon pollut is usually theresult of an overrich fuel mixture,misusing of chock,clogged air filter,too much oil consume ,retated ignition timing ,low speed operation,the plug used is too cold. Action:Inspect the output voltage of igniton coil.Install a hotter type of spark plug.
